Job Description
Department & how it relates to the role Group Tax has various roles within Network Rail. We * manage the relationship with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) * influence changes in proposed legislation by representing the Group directly with UK Treasury, other Government Departments or through industry Groups such as the CBI, UK Utilities Group and the Previously Nationalised Industry Group * provide tax advice and HMRC liaison on specific situations, processes transactions and policy * identify, evaluate and implement tax savings * monitor Network Rail compliance with all relevant tax laws (including paying the right amount of tax at the right time, filing returns and keeping up to date with budget changes) and * calculate the tax numbers which are included in the accounts and in forecasts. This means that we work closely with a range of areas within the business, but most commonly we speak to people with VAT, SDLT, chargeable gains and employment tax issues. Our large property and asset portfolio means we have a large number of transactions requiring specialist tax support, as well as a significant volume of reporting which must be undertaken each year. About the role (External) The Tax Asset Specialist will * manage the company’s compliance with all legal requirements concerning corporation tax in relation to property and other assets * prepare figures for statutory reporting purposes in relation to assets, including deferred taxation - this will include managing the process of data collection at interim and year end * analyse expenditure and allocate assets to the relevant capital allowances pools * prepare CT computations in respect of all disposals of assets * manage and forecast CA claims * support the Group Tax team in SDLT advice where necessary * interpret relevant tax legislation to enable Group compliance with statutory requirements, Accounting Standards and UK Generally Accepted Accounting Principles to the extent that they relate to direct taxation * undertake effective tax planning in order to minimise the Group’s Corporation Tax liability and maximise its losses * negotiate with HM Inspector of Taxes and external advisors to resolve complex issues and disputes and obtaining favourable settlements * maintain internal manuals and guidance in relation to asset taxation * participate in training sessions for other members of the finance team * provide ad hoc advisory on asset and property taxes as required * manage the budget for tax publications and livences and ensure software and licences are up to date Essential · Full professional qualifications in Taxation and/or Accounting or significant experience within a tax role · Experience of a wide exposure to all aspects of accounting principles and methods · Sound knowledge of Corporation tax and Capital Allowance Legislation, including Inland Revenue concessions, dispensations and statements of practice · Excellent written and verbal communication · Willingness to support other areas of taxation where necessary · Computer literacy, specifically knowledge of corporation tax software such as Abacus and good Excel skills · Positive attitude with a willingness to persevere to complete tasks Desirable · Good awareness of the rules surrounding SDLT · Experience training other finance professionals · A knowledge of cash flow analysis and financial appraisal techniques · Experience of statutory audit from a tax perspective
