Department & how it relates to the role

Strategic Sourcing is part of Contracts and Procurement which is responsible for the sourcing and purchasing of all works, goods and services for Network Rail, the commercial management of its contracts and supplier relationships and the physical supply chain which underpins our infrastructure projects. ‘Our vision is to be recognised as World Class in contracting and procurement by 2011 by internal customers, suppliers and external bodies’.

Suppliers play a key role not only in what we deliver but also how well we deliver as an organisation. The role of Supplier Development Manager is to provide expertise and enable a wide range of supplier development activities across Network Rail by acting as a champion to progress and implement strategic initiatives.

About the role (External)

You dont need to have experience of working within the rail industry - in fact, what will set you apart is your drive and natural flair for working with people at all levels and across organisations.

With significant commercial experience, you will act as a champion for suppliers and recognise their vital role in delivering our strategic goals. You will work closely with suppliers to identify and unlock strategic opportunties.

Job Purpose

To provide expertise and enable a wide range of corporate supplier development activities across Network Rail. To champion, progress and implement of supplier objectives, including Supplier Account Management and Category Management.

Key Accountabilities

1. To champion, progress and implement corporate supplier development objectives.

2. To brief sponsors, internal and external stakeholders and any other appropriate parties on supplier development activities, process changes and improvements.

3. To contribute to the development and delivery of supplier related proposals, including assisting with the design and structuring of supporting business processes, communications and other related activities.

4. To develop and manage appropriate supplier monitoring systems to measure the relative success of corporate supplier activities. To review and report actual performance, with a view to identifying key drivers and to making improvement recommendations.

5. Develop and maintain appropriate frameworks to guide optimum procurement supply base management activities within the context of category management.

6. To develop and manage Network Rail’s Supplier Account Management (SAM) process programme via the establishment of appropriate improvement activities.

7. To support the account management of selected strategic and operational suppliers across the Network Rail supplier base at the appropriate level.

8. To lead the rollout and continuous improvement of supplier related analysis tools and approaches for informed decision making across Contracts and Procurement and the wider business.

Job Skills, Experience and Qualifications

Essential

• Evidence of application of exceptional analytical skills within a large commercial environment
• A track record of successful project management
• Degree qualified or with equivalent business experience
• Consistent and demonstrational levels of drive, tenacity and mental energy
• Proven relationship building, communication & presentation skills
• Proven track record of working from own initiative
• Evidence of a track record in the development and implementation of change initiatives
• Advanced level of proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, particularly Excel & PowerPoint

Desirable

• Experience of Supplier Account Management process and system development and implementation
• Experience of Supplier Relationship Management in context of Category Management
• Experience of working within a large national/multinational business (>£0.5bn per annum turnover)
• Previous participation in strategic and business improvement projects
• From a rail, construction, or complex engineering background
• Experience of using Microsoft Project to plan and deliver complex projects
• Financial management experience or with an Accountancy qualification
