Job Description

Department & how it relates to the role

Signalling Design Group (SDG) is a specialist organisation engaged in the project management and production of signalling designs from pre-feasibility to detailed design. SDG also undertake the correlation of deficiencies in signalling design records. SDG consists of three groups, Works Group, Schemes Group and the Level Crossing Group. This vacancy is in the Schemes Group undertaking the pre-feasibility and development of major Signalling Design Scheme Plans for such projects as Reading new station; Crossrail, the South Wales re-signalling project and soon, the whole GW mainline upgrade.

About the role (External)

Manage all engineering and development activities, resulting in schemes that are affordable, and that meet programme requirements in a safe and environmentally responsible manner for time, cost and quality. Give consideration to reliability, operational capacity modelling, maintainability, ease of constructions to achieve engineering excellence.

Manage the engineering interfaces of allocated proposals with concurrent work in other disciplines, or within other programmes. Liaise with the Designated throughout the project on inter-discipline matters. Provide adequate resourcing of project design, in both the quantity of Network Rail and supplier staff, and in the use of the most appropriate support equipment.

Manage the preparation of the full engineering data package required for detailed design, and participate in answering clarifications/queries as needed. Maintain strict change control on scope development, evaluate cost, time and performance impacts in conjunction with development management and project engineers. The support tools for this role are:-

a) Secure all relevant base data
b) Review compliance with appropriate signalling standards.
c) Use of evaluation methods (e.g. HAZOP, Signal Sighting, etc) .
d) Use feedback from relevant past projects across the UK rail network, lessons learned, etc.
e) Progress knowledge base via training, briefings and mentoring.

SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

The following are desirable for this role:-

a) An Engineering Degree or equivalent industry recognised training qualification.
b) IRSE Design Licence.
c) A working knowledge of rail engineering; relevant successful experience working in the principal discipline and an adequate understanding of all other related disciplines.
d) Strong evaluation and decision making skills.
e) An ability to work and communicate effectively in a team context.
