Department Description

Investment Projects Buildings and Civils manage all activities associated with the maintenance and renewal of Network Rail owned structures and earthworks, as well as overseeing a portfolio of 9,000 managed properties.

Network Rail has the largest civil engineering asset base in the UK consisting of 40,000 bridges, 750 tunnels, 13,000 miles of embankments and cuttings, 1,500 miles of retaining walls, 21,300 culverts and 120 miles of sea defences.

The scope of the works delivered includes examinations, assessments, work bank identification, detailed designs and the implementation of projects, ranging in value from £10k to £35m. The delivered annual outturn is £400m per annum on circa 1,000 projects per annum.

To prepare CAD and hand drawings and develop concept, feasibility and design proposals in support of the Senior Technician Civils.

Detailed External Job Description

Network Rail has established a new ‘In House’ Civils Design Team based in Manchester. Your expertise as a Senior Technician will enable you to lead a team of Technicians to prepare AutoCAD design drawings for a wide range of Civil Engineering repair and renewal projects for Network Rail.

Working for a Senior Design Engineer your experience will enable you to liaise with the Network Rail project teams and deliver high quality design drawings and specifications to the standards and specification of Network Rail.

You must have an ability to manage all engineering activities so that they result in schemes that are affordable and meet programme requirements in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.

The Key Accountabilities of the role are as follows;

· To prepare CAD and hand drawings and develop concept, feasibility and design proposals to meet business objectives.
· To provide cost effective, fit for purpose and value for money technical design service to internal and external clients and in accordance with efficiency targets.
· To establish, maintain and improve cost effective ‘corporate’ design standards for new build and renewals works having due regard to the particular requirements of company standards and policies and heritage designations where these apply.
· To proactively participate as a member of integrated design and construction teams in the delivery of projects.
· To proactively participate as a member of a multi-disciplinary design team inputting the designs and specifications of each discipline into the detailed design documentation.
· To manage the preparation of specifications from a multi-functional design team ensuring compliance with appropriate standards and legislation.
· To liaise and consult with external authorities and assist the Senior Design Engineer and Design Engineer in order to secure smooth and successful consents and approvals.
· To brief and manage external technical design resources serving the business.
· To review third-party technical design proposals for works to Network Rail’s assets.
· To lead and direct Civils Technicians to serve the business.
· Support the Construction Design Management (CDM) Planning Co-ordinator in all associated duties and carry out or monitor cross-discipline engineering checks of all relevant aspects of the proposal.

Essential

· Degree or Diploma in Civil Engineering
· Excellent design and presentational skills, including use of CAD, Powerpoint and freehand drafting (AutoCAD LT/Full 06 preferred)
· Experienced in working in a team environment
· Construction Design Management (CDM) Awareness
· Experienced in the detailing of reinforced concrete and structural steelwork with at least 10 years experience
