Department & how it relates to the role



Network Rail is planning to transfer certain activities of our business to a new National Centre which will open in Milton Keynes during 2012. You should be aware that this position will be included in this move.

About the role (External)



The purpose of this role is to provide industry technical direction to developments in the area of welding & NDE to support a systems based approach. Develop cost optimised engineering solutions to support the railway of the future.



Key Accountabilities



· Identify opportunities and manage innovation in the area of welding & NDE engineering to facilitate the achievement of industry objectives.

· Lead the customer-focused development of equipment, systems and processes to agreed cost, time and quality. Confirm the business case remains robust throughout developments.

· Provide input to the development of welding & NDE policy and to the development and management of welding & NDE standards, specifications and engineering competence requirements.

· Maintain close liaison with manufacturers who wish to supply equipment to the railway. Influence the development of technology to meet industry needs. Provide technical input to acceptance processes.

· Provide expert technical advice on welding & NDE and associated equipment, systems and processes to Network Rail, the rest of the rail industry and to external bodies.

· Provide expert technical input to investigations and the management of resulting recommendations.

· Maintain an on-going review of welding & NDE of systems standards for welding & NDE engineering.



Job Skills, Experience and Qualifications



Essential

· Incorporated Engineer, or able to demonstrate an equivalent level of learning

· Degree in a relevant subject

· Substantial engineering experience in a project or maintenance environment in the area of welding & NDE

· Knowledge of policies and standards relating to welding & NDE engineering

· Knowledge of the engineering safety management and risk assessment processes

· Holds relevant professional license or capable of achieving within reasonable time-scales

· Understanding of project management and financial analysis principles

Desirable

· Chartered Engineer

· Experience in a safety critical role

· Experience in both maintenance and projects
