Department & how it relates to the role



Network Rail is planning to transfer certain activities of our business to a new National Centre which will open in Milton Keynes during 2012. You should be aware that this position will be included in this move.

About the role (External)



The main purpose of this role is to lead the provision of rail vehicle engineering expertise to assigned third party new trains programmes and associated projects, to protect the achievement of Network Rail’s goals.



Key Accountabilities



· Work with internal and external stakeholders to formulate credible and affordable remits and business specifications for third party new trains and other rail vehicle related projects and activities sponsored by or impacting on Network Rail.

· Develop and apply consistent life cycle, usage and engineering philosophy criteria for use in the assessment of new trains and rail vehicle projects

· Coordinate strategy for and make rail vehicle engineering input to technical specifications associated with the third party acquisition, maintenance and use of rail vehicles, delivering these activities compliant to agreed cost, time and quality.

· Lead and coordinate rail vehicle engineering input to the client and design scrutiny process for third party rail vehicle projects.

· Provide input to the development of the engineering standards and specifications for rail vehicles and other engineering documents.

· Manage the handover and handback of rail vehicles including the provision of appropriate test regimes to support the seamless introduction to service of new or significantly altered rail vehicles.

· Promote the role of Network Rail in new trains projects with industry stakeholders.



Job Skills, Experience and Qualifications



Essential

· Chartered Engineer or considerable industry experience of project engineering

· Degree in a relevant subject

· Detailed knowledge in mechanical or electrical rail vehicle engineering systems

· Detailed knowledge of standards relating to rail vehicle engineering



Desirable

· Experience in rail vehicle maintenance

· Understanding of project management techniques

* Expertise in rail vehicle design principles and processes.
