Job Description

Department & how it relates to the role

Creating a modern, safer, more efficient railway is no small challenge. And it’s going to take £35bn of investment over the next five years. One of the most exciting projects we’re delivering is the £1.9bn Rail Communications System upgrade. The project incorporates both Global System for Mobile–Railways (GSM-R) and Fixed Telecoms Networks (FTN). Working together with ATOC, this role is based within the team responsible for the installation of cab radios in over 8,000 train cabs across Britain. This is not just a chance to drive the project forward. Your success will have a marked impact on other high-profile developments – such as the £2.2 Crossrail infrastructure upgrade and the £5.5bn Thameslink improvement project – that are all relying on its successful completion.

This is one of the biggest projects in the industry. You’ll need to be expert in managing similar work in the rail operational environment and experienced in large-scale, national modification programmes. People skills are at the heart of the role. You’ll be coaching, mentoring and troubleshooting for the contractors responsible for the installation. Not only will you be communicating with all stakeholders, both internally and externally, you’ll also build relationships across the industry, with the credibility to not just support, but to inspire your colleagues.

You’ll manage projects using a structured approach and methodology, with a commercial understanding and awareness. Your vision to foresee issues that could arise, and to develop strategies to make sure they don’t, is essential. There’s no doubt this is a wide-ranging, challenging role. But as it’s brand new, you’ll have the chance to make it your own, leaving your mark on this nationally significant project and building your considerable reputation as you do so.

About the role (External)

Key Accountabilities

· Develop and deliver a significant project on time, to budget and to other agreed success criteria within corporate guidelines.

· Ensure the effective development and management of suppliers and staff to meet all corporate standards, in particular those relating to safety, quality and environment, and disseminate lessons learned.

· Ensure the effective development and management or suppliers to meet project requirements.

· Maintain effective relationships with key Investment customers and stakeholders, ensuring that all communications with outside bodies (e.g. political, media, Local Authorities etc) are agreed by and managed through the Government and Corporate Affairs function.

Desirable

Member of a relevant professional body with chartered status and/or educated to degree level.

Six Sigma Yellow Belt.

Youll work within the Project Team and ensuring that every delivery objective is carried out to cost, time and quality. But you’ll also have the vision to foresee issues that could arise and develop strategies to make sure they are dealt with before they become problems. It will take plenty of commercial acumen, and the credibility and sway to not just support, but to inspire your colleagues. You’ll also need to be an expert at dealing with people because you’ll be building relationships with a wide array of industry colleagues, not to mention within the Project Team.

It’s a wide-ranging and challenging role. It’s also a chance to build on your impressive reputation in the industry with a truly landmark project.

You’ll be a member of the National Rollout Team; and essentially will ensure that the installation of 8500 cab radios happens across every class and fleet of 40 operators across the whole of the UK - from heritage models to modern high-speed trains.

On a day-to-day basis, youll consult with operators; ensure that Network Rail engineers and our industry colleagues adhere to best practice, based on lessons learnt and from your expertise in the field; and youll be a key interface within the Network Rail project teams; youll be responsible for operational rollout issues - such as major upgrades and any systems issues.

Were looking for an expert in managing projects within the rail operational environment, who has an understanding of how the industry operates and is (or can be) credible within Network Rail and with our wider industry colleagues. Youll need to have managed projects of a similar size and scope, using a structured approach and methodology, with a commercial understanding and awareness. The key requirements for this role though are exceptional interpersonal and communication skills - youll need to be an exceptionally strong collaborator, influencer, leader and enabler.

This is a brand new role and you have the opportunity to make your mark on it in this national project. It will be high profile and you will be a key figure in the introduction of a new technology into the industry.
