Job Description
Department & how it relates to the role The role is to assess the conformance of new or modified rail vehicles and associated equipment with regulations and standards, assess risks posed to Network Rail Infrastructure and to carry out technical investigations. About the role (External) VCT are looking for an experienced engineer to join the specialist team engaged in NoBo and VAB services for internal and external clients. The successful candidate will have experience in the following areas; acting as a Conformance signatory within a VAB, and / or an assessor within a NoBo. In addition, the successful candidate will need to demonstrate competence in at least one of the following specialisms: * vehicle dynamics, * braking systems, * structures, * hydraulics or * electrical systems or have been involved with On-Track Machines and / or locomotives and have a detailed knowledge of the RIR and ROGS regulations or have other relevant experience. The candidate should: · be a member of a relevant engineering Institution · have significant relevant experience · be an authorised vehicle acceptance body or NoBo signatory for the issue of certificates for vehicles and associated equipment, or be capable of achieving this · be capable of communication at senior level in the UK and Europe · have a thorough understanding of UK and international approvals standards It is desirable that the candidate should be a Chartered Engineer and some language capability would be an advantage (typically French or German). The work will require you to: 1. Assess the conformance of designs for new or modified rail vehicles and associated equipment against mandatory requirements and prepare certification. 2. Assess amended or new maintenance plans to confirm whether they will, if adhered to, keep the rail vehicles and associated equipment compliant with mandatory requirements for their whole life. 3. Check construction of rail vehicles and associated equipment for conformance with the accepted design. 4. Carry out technical investigations, as required, checking that they do not compromise assessor / certifier / signatory independence. 5. Support the development of guidance documents on the use of the relevant standards for the acceptance of rail vehicles and associated equipment and make recommendations for changes to UK and international standards. 6. Prepare submissions to external approval bodies, NoBos, NRAB, RSSB and HMRI on behalf of customers and represent customers at NRAB panels and in discussion with those organisations. 7. Advise customers on load / vehicle / gauge inter-relationships. 8. Act as a NoBo/VAB certifier/assessor and Competent Person under the ROGS Regulations.
