Department & how it relates to the role



Network Rail’s public affairs team is one of the wider corporate communications functions, which are responsible for managing the company’s relationships with a huge and diverse range of stakeholders, both inside and outside Network Rail, seeking to build trust and understanding for the company and its activities.



The public affairs team manages the relationships with politicians, in Westminster and the devolved institutions; government departments; statutory industry watchdogs; industry stakeholders more generally; and with the company’s members. It also manages Network Rail’s activity on legislation; produces responses to select committee inquiries and government consultations; and engages on the wider public policy agenda.


About the role (External)



You will devise strategies to manage the company’s activities in Parliament effectively; support engagement with key political stakeholders including the Transport Select Committee and Opposition spokespeople; make sure relevant MPs and officials at the Department for Transport are fully updated when rail issues are a key part of the wider news agenda; and keep the company aware of key political developments affecting the railway.



You’ll need to establish an effective network of internal and external contacts. Proactively maintaining a thorough awareness of events and supporting the delivery of key messages. The activities you manage will link directly to business objectives and you’ll ensure consistency with our overall communications strategies.

It’s not necessary for you to have rail industry experience, but you will need motivation and a natural flair for dealing with people at all levels.

o Degree level education and/or a relevant professional qualification?
