Job Description

Department Description

Network Rail is at the heart of revitalising Britain’s railway. Over the next five years, we intend to invest £34.6 billion on improving and developing the rail network. From multi-million pound schemes, such as the rejuvenation of King’s Cross station and the upgrade and expansion of Thameslink, to Europe’s largest civil engineering project - Crossrail, we are involved in some of the most ambitious and diverse ventures the UK has ever seen. Working with us you’ll benefit from state-of-the-art training and a second-to-none support network, all in a company with an annual turnover that equals those within the top 5 of the FTSE 100.

Brief Vacancy Description

Delivering our projects to a high standard is of vast importance to this project and Network Rail, this role plays a significant part in helping the Scheme and Project Managers.

The Kent/Sussex Asset Protection team manages hundreds of projects in London, Sussex and Kent. These projects encompass a huge variety of types and values. Project values range from hundreds of thousands to hundreds of millions of pounds of external client expenditure. Types of projects include asset protection to bridges, tunnels, residential and commercial developments, statutory undertakers’ crossings, level crossing alterations, electricity pylons, telecoms masts and a host of others, including major schemes such as Crossrail. The essential theme of all these projects is that they must have some impact on the railway that needs project managing by the team in order to reduce the risk to NWR.

The team’s involvement is a cradle to grave one and starts with initial exploratory meetings when the scope, programme, funding/costs, procurement and other fundamental requirements are understood and agreed. Contracts are negotiated and signed followed by design and construction consents, culminating in the completion and commissioning of the projects. Managers within the team are responsible for portfolios of projects and for ensuring that a professional and effective service is provided at minimal risk to the railway. A great deal of liaison within the company is essential so that all disciplines and departments ( e.g civil, structural, signalling, telecoms, electrification, track, etc,) affected by the external proposals are fully consulted and the results form part of the coordinated requirements presented to the external clients and their agents and consultants. The external clients also pay the team’s costs in full and estimating, cost monitoring, invoicing, payment monitoring and monthly forecasting are also essential activities in the successful management of projects

Management Philosophy

The team is a well knit one where new members are welcomed, mentored and trained to help them settle in and start producing their best efforts in a supportive environment. The team has achieved, for two years running, one of the highest scores in the company for staff satisfaction, based on Gallup’s independent annual polls. The team’s effectiveness depends on a wide knowledge of project management and all the railway interests of different parts of NWR. Networking with others in the company is essential for success and time is allowed for this. The nature of the team’s work tends to install a high order of strategic thinking in all the team members, and this can be very career enhancing

Vacancy Description

The Project Management Assistant is responsible for supporting the project management activities within the team and eventually taking responsibility for managing projects of an increasingly complex nature.

Activities and requirements include:

Managing the team’s information by means of spreadsheets and helping to analyse trends that can be used for improving the overall management of the team. It is likely that an astute PMA will start appreciating overall management thinking from his day to day work in collating raw information from numerous people and setting it out in a meaningful way
Assisting initially but eventually managing a portfolio of projects by being mentored and trained until competence and confidence is built up
Building on, learning and applying project management and company standards and practices to day to day work.
The role might suit someone seeking to enter the world of project management and career development from a preliminary interest and background in an engineering discipline (Degree or equivalents)
Competence in communicating effectively with people from a wide variety of backgrounds, orally and in writing
Competence in planning activities and thinking clearly about objectives and timescales for achieving them
Competence in persuasiveness and presenting a good case.
