Job Description

Department Description

The Operations and Customer Services function operates the railway day-to-day. It delivers train paths, timetabling and train movements to enable safe performance and meet the needs of our customers.

The function owns and manages our business relationships with the passenger and freight operators and external commercial stakeholders. The functional customer focused organisation provides clear ownership of operating responsibilities for all customers and stakeholders. The area delivery units are the building blocks of engineering and operations excellence. They enable Network Rail to manage the customer and stakeholder relationships – from freight operators to operators of long-distance passenger services, commuter and rural franchises and passenger transport executives on an efficient and consistent basis within a single integrated function.

Brief Vacancy Description

To drive the industry train performance improvement through providing and improving reports, analysis and statistical forecasts of punctuality and reliability backed by the understanding and research on key influencing factors.

Detailed External Job Description

As part of the national performance team within Network Rail your work will directly lead to continued improvement in the punctuality and reliability of the nation’s train service. You will be responsible for planning, managing and delivering high quality and innovative statistical analysis, reports and projects. You will bring insight into the large amount of data captured on train performance and ensure management decisions are made on solid evidence. The role is a perfect opportunity to link problem solving, numerical analysis, data mining and forecasting with understanding a complex industry and driving change which could impact on every rail user.

We would expect you to:

1. Analyse existing performance trends at national and local level to understand explanatory variables and identify corrective actions. Provide statistically based forecasts of performance, as required by the company, train operators and others.
2. Support the development and tracking of performance targets and trajectories.
3. Provide the required performance information and insight into cross functional projects such as Route Utilisation Strategies (RUS) and regulatory reviews.
4. Support other team members, where required, in achieving their agreed development objectives through performance management, coaching and planning of training and development.
5. Support in the development and leading programmes of work to drive improvement in performance analysis across the business.
6. Provide insight in setting priorities for performance improvement initiatives.
