Network Rail is at the heart of revitalising Britain’s railway. Over the next five years, we intend to invest £35 billion on improving and developing the rail network. From multi-million pound schemes, such as the rejuvenation of King’s Cross station and the upgrade and expansion of Thameslink, to Europe’s largest civil engineering project - Crossrail, we are involved in some of the most ambitious and diverse ventures the UK has ever seen.

We quite literally move Britain. And that’s no easy task. As demand on the railway increases, efficient timetabling becomes ever more vital to our success. Our Operational Planning team plan the journeys of hundreds of trains, getting people to exactly where they need to be.

There’s no doubt about it – this is challenging work. But that’s something you’ll relish. Naturally analytical, organised and logical, the thought of solving complex problems will genuinely excite you. It’s not just about careful planning: it’s about balancing conflicting priorities, managing the expectations of train operating companies and users of the railway.

After an initial period of training, you’ll become a technical specialist within your team. You’ll help to coach and mentor your colleagues, checking quality and providing an exceptional service to internal and external customers at all times. You may have a background in logistics or have some experience of timetabling or scheduling, but a specific background is by no means necessary. We’re looking for people who have a real eye for detail - an ability to deliver the best results, but a respect for deadlines. A passion for helping others to achieve their full potential and excellent computer skills are also essential, as is enthusiasm for the challenge of the role.
