Department & how it relates to the role

Infrastructure Projects re-launches as a regionally-based business unit of Network Rail from April 2012. In addition to four regional delivery units (current work includes Crossrail and the redevelopment of King Cross station); its scope includes a national Signalling division, Thameslink, and the Railway Communication System programmes. Its remit is the efficient delivery of renewals and enhancements on our railway through professional control and management of capital projects. Infrastructure Projects is aligned closely to Network Rail’s ten routes to give better coordination across the business and to deliver capital projects efficiently and at best value.

About the role (External)

Job Purpose

The main purpose of this role will be to deliver via our partners and suppliers effective and efficient systems and support services to Infrastructure Projects, acting as single point contact for service provision.

Key Accountabilities

• Lead and deliver Information Management service delivery across Infrastructure Projects

• Plan and deliver appropriate IM services, working closely with Network Rail to understand future demand, emerging technologies and areas for improvement.

• Manage infrastructure services provided via third parties so that they are fit for purpose and meet service levels.

• Build and maintain effective relationships with IT services suppliers.

• Create, maintain and monitor Service Level Agreements with our partners and suppliers to specify delivery requirements, determine delivery performance & instigate corrective action when required.

• Create, maintain and monitor Service Level Agreements with our customers, maximising the use of common services to reduce costs and instigate/manage corrective action when required.

• Reduce the Cost of services in line with the Infrastructure Projects Business Plan.

• Conduct an ongoing assessment of infrastructure services and make strategic and tactical sourcing decisions against industry standards for cost and service levels.

• Work with the Head of Systems Development and Strategy to facilitate the smooth transition of applications/systems into the production and support environments.

• Lead the execution of service continuity and IT disaster recovery plans.

• Undertake enterprise level technology tracking and planning to map solutions to future Infrastructure Projects needs and identify opportunities for innovation.

• Represent Infrastructure Projects systems interests at Network Rail internal and external meetings e.g. Special Interest Groups and benchmarking.

• Establish and sustain effective relationships with key suppliers and drive continuous service improvement initiatives.

Job Skills, Experience and Qualifications

Essential

• Member of a relevant professional body with chartered status and/or educated to degree level.
• Relevant experience in the successful management, control, planning and delivery of IT infrastructure and services.
• Good communication skills with a significant background of team leadership
• Ability to undertake structured analysis to problems and develop business-wide solutions.

Desirable

• A post-degree business qualification.
• Chartered Engineer/Manager
• Sound knowledge of in the UK rail industry.
