Job Description

Department & how it relates to the role

The FTN/GSM-R Programme represents a £1.7bn investment to improve the reliability, availability, efficiency and safety of Britain’s railway through the implementation of proven modern digital telecommunications technology. It is the largest telecoms project ever to be undertaken on Britain’s railways. Over the next six years the project will provide a new, high functionality, digital radio system that will allow train drivers to communicate directly with signallers across the entire network. This is GSM-R (Global System for Mobile communications – Railway).

At the same time, the project is renewing the entire line-side fixed telecoms network that supports all of the railway’s daily telecoms needs. This involves the installation of around 15,000km of optical fibre and copper cables, installing around 3,000 new transmission sites, over 2,250 new radio sites, 7 new operational telephone exchanges and migration of circa 50,000nr operational circuits. This is FTN (Fixed Telecom Network).

Stage 4 GSM-R Operations Design Team is a specialist organisation engaged in the project management and production of GSM-R operations designs from sponsor remit to detailed design. The team is responsible for the design of driver to signaller call routing and role profiles of end users’ terminals located in all signalboxes, route control and electrical control room throughout Great Britain.

About the role (External)

The GSM-R Operations Design Engineer will be responsible for the leading the technical interface between projects external to the FTN/GSM-R Programme that require GSM-R configuration ensuring that impact assessment is conducted and technical liaison takes place.

The successful candidate shall have;

* An ability to explain complex engineering functionality in a clear way
* An ability to produce detailed work without errors
* An ability to assess the impact of changes and a proven ability in change management processes.
* Understand the principles of radio propagation and how it relates to the operational railway.
* Shall have had previous experience in the Rail industry.
