Job Description
Department & how it relates to the role The Operations and Customer Services function operates the railway day-to-day. It delivers train paths, timetabling and train movements to enable safe performance and meet the needs of our customers. The function owns and manages our business relationships with the passenger and freight operators and external commercial stakeholders. The functional customer focused organisation provides clear ownership of operating responsibilities for all customers and stakeholders. The area delivery units are the building blocks of engineering and operations excellence. About the role (External) This is a technically oriented position and requires a basic understanding of electrical systems as a minimum requirement preferably in heavy industry. The Electrical Control is a 24/7 365 days a year operation that requires constant manning. This involves working to a roster on shifts which may include 12 hour weekend working day and night, morning, afternoon and nightshift working from Monday to Friday as well as straight dayshifts. All the Controllers are required to rotate across this pattern. The Grade 5 ECO is the junior controller’s role although is still recognised as being required to take the lead responsibility when interfacing with external parties in safety critical communications, for decision making in managing electrically oriented issues and ensuring optimum performance levels are maintained in supplying electric traction to the railway and in protecting infrastructure. This requires a high level of technical knowledge in dealing with high voltage electrical systems and plant such as feeding arrangements, Voltage transformers and Protection systems. A working knowledge of ‘Working on or about 25Kv electrified lines, The Green Book 29987 is essential as is awareness of The Railway Group Standard Rule Book GE/RT8000. Additional requirements are knowledge of Module AM for AC electrified Lines and Isolation Planning Processes with associated documentation. The Grade 5 controller would also preferably have a working knowledge of SCADA monitoring systems and associated operational controls. * Plan isolations and prepare the required documentation for delivery aligning to the recognised standards * Ensure the optimum performance of the electrification system is maintained at all times. * Take the lead to ensure that incidents affecting supplies are dealt with swiftly and safely * Support the principles of the rostering arrangements at the control to ensure required cover is maintained at all times. * Work to authorise electrification instructions. * Deal with electrical supply issues not covered by instructions by the safest and most appropriate manner, ensuring that the Electrical and Plant Engineer is advised. * Participate in competency assessment arrangements. * Check isolations diagrams for amendments, advising the Electrical and Plant Engineer of amendments required
