Tasks

SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Chief of an Engineering Survey Party, performing and/or supervising all phases of work in the field. Responsible for operating and maintaining surveying instruments and data acquisition equipment as a member of a field survey crew. Performs the more difficult survey tasks using electronic survey equipment, data collection devices, digital and optical levels; takes field notes and creates sketches. Reads and interprets design plans. Makes necessary calculations to establish the location and elevations of proposed structures; establishes horizontal and vertical control; determines grades and elevations. Operates and supervises the use of all survey equipment including electronic total stations, digital transits, digital and optical levels, laser levels, data collection devices, Philadelphia and lenker rods and calculators. Checks all work performed by the survey field crews. Trains and instructs crew members on the proper use and care of surveying equipment. Responsible for performing track and right-of-way surveys and verifying that the lines and grades of the proposed improvements are within the clearance envelopes and right-of-way boundaries. The surveys include topographic surveys in support of track designs; layout in support of track construction and

renewal; record surveys of completed work; boundary line surveys along the railroad right of way. Performs related survey and engineering calculations, reduce data into computer readable format and prepare preliminary drawings. Lays out design elements in the field for use by track construction and maintenance forces. Provides technical expertise and supervises contract surveyors to assure precision and improve Engineering Department surveys.
EDUCATION: Must have a high school diploma and equivalent work experience.
PREFERRED EDUCATION: Associate Degree in Engineering/Surveying or High School Diploma and equivalent work experience.
WORK EXPERIENCE: Must have 1-5 years experience in railroad surveying and a general understanding of railroad track geometry. Must have proven experience supervising survey crews. Proven experience in various types of land surveys. Demonstrated surveying experience including techniques and procedures for the operation and general maintenance of land surveying related equipment. Working knowledge of the use of surveying instruments and data collection devices. Prior satisfactory job performance. Experience in using CADD software. Must become qualified in RWP, AMT2 and MW1000. Must possess a valid drivers license. Knowledge of the operation and use of survey instruments and personal computer office programs.
PREFERRED WORK EXPERIENCE: 5 years experience in railroad surveying. Experience in using MicroStation CADD software. Candidate must be in good physical condition and pass a pre-employment physical exam.
COMMUNICATION AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
