Department & how it relates to the role

About the role (External)

Role

Work with business colleagues to define the strategic direction for a given domain and align the IM Strategy with business requirements. Plan the evolution of the IM Strategy to meet the future business needs and manage the analysis of business requirements.

Key Accountabilities

1. Maintain IM Strategy alignment with the business strategy and objectives, such that the IM Strategy and architectures can be traced to business needs.
2. Maintain IM Strategy alignment with relevant legislative and regulatory requirements. It must meet industry and company standards, be flexible to changing requirements, be grounded in terms of practical and implementation issues and be ‘owned’ by the business.
3. Work with the IM delivery teams and business colleagues to define and understand the strategic direction, priorities and objectives and align them with IM’s programmes of work.
4. Work with development programmes & projects, acting as the design authority, to deploy the strategic architectures in the most effective manner and monitor the programmes & projects alignment to them.
5. Promote the enterprise product sets & relevant standards (e.g. data management, middleware, workflow & modelling tools and application suites).
6. Maintain the appropriate integration of Network Rail’s enterprise processes, data and systems (within Network Rail and with organisations that Network Rail deals with).
7. Communicate and update business and technical architectures and models, as required, in a manner that the inherent advantages of the strategic approach are highlighted and accepted by the target audience.
8. Enable the reuse of analysis & design deliverables within Network Rail (through the use of models & architectures).
9. Maintain knowledge of trends in the external IS/IT market and industry best practices in IM, and identify the potential impacts / opportunities for Network Rail and rail industry partners.

Job Skills, Experience and Qualifications

Essential

• Significant experience of business analysis and/or process & information architectures in a corporate IS function
• Experience of architectural setting / compliance within an environment where systems and services are delivered via outsourced arrangements with key suppliers
• Thorough and up to date understanding of IT consultancy approaches, tools and techniques
• Strong commercial acumen
• Strong analytical thinker
• Strong communicator and influencer

Desirable

• Knowledge of Enterprise Architecture techniques and methodologies
• Knowledge of the railway industry
• Recognised qualification in Enterprise Architecture (e.g. TOGAF)
• Architectural experience within a web based environment
• Experience of the use of modelling, data management, simulation, workflow and end-user analysis tools
• Enterprise integration concepts & technologies e.g. EAI, Web Services
• Data Management concepts & technology (e.g. Data warehousing, DBMS’s e.g. Oracle).
• Process Management & workflow concepts & technologies
• Middleware concepts & technologies
• Document, Content &/or Digital Asset Management concepts & technologies (e.g. Documentum).
• CASE/Modelling tools (ideally, Systems Architect)
• Networking & Operating system concepts & technologies
• Knowledge of specific applications used within Network Rail
• Thorough knowledge of strategic solutions, their planned use and the ability to identify their potential elsewhere across the industry
