Job Description

Department & how it relates to the role

The Crossrail project aims to deliver 24 trains an hour through 23km of new subsurface railway infrastructure under central London, continuing outwards to the east and west over 76km of some of the most congested and complex rail infrastructure in the UK. The Crossrail project is jointly sponsored by the Department for Transport (DfT) and Transport for London (TfL) and is being developed via a joint-venture company Cross London Rail Links (CLRL). A significant amount of work is required to Network Rail’s surface network and the interfaces between Network Rail and CLRL, DfT & TfL are considerable. A project team has been formed within Network Rail to manage these going forward.

By working for Network Rail as a Building Services Engineer, you’ll put in place design solutions to create a world class rail infrastructure for the twenty-first century. By joining us now, you’ll be part of a team taking a major project from design to completion, working on a range of projects from build, alteration, refurbishment and reconstruction to major station renewals.

About the role (External)

First and foremost, you’ll care about good design. You’ll work alongside design houses and contractors to ensure their plans will work in practice and provide all the functionality required by Network Rail, and our sponsors. All this is to be achieved while providing value for money, and meeting all relevant standards. And, of course, you’ll take a sympathetic approach to heritage, energy conservation, environmental and access considerations.

Do you have….?

* Knowledge and experience in applying and using, conditions of contract for building services and plant works?
* Experience of building services maintenance/renewals within the rail industry or other multi-site property organisation?
* Thorough knowledge of statutory and/or rail industry requirements for building services and plant works?
* Membership of a relevant professional institution (e.g. RICS, MIOB, CIBSE)
* A demonstrable aptitude for option development as well as strong evaluation and decision-making skills?
* An understanding of the life cycle of rail infrastructure?
* A knowledge of compliance type activity, including CDM, risk assessment and internal and external auditing?
* Experience in large multi-discipline rail projects, ideally having worked on all stages of the project lifecycle?
* Have a sympathetic approach to safety, energy conservation, reliability, maintainability, constructability, environmental and whole life cost requirements and the ability to apply them to an operational railway environment in line with Network Rail policies?

Are you….?

* Conversant with all aspects of railway building services engineering i.e. buildings, stations, depots and the standards which apply to them?
* Able to review and constructively comment on third party produced proposals for new build, alteration, refurbishment and reconstruction schemes to ensure compliance with Railway Group and Network Rail standards and policy?
* Appreciate the need for building services assets which are fit for purpose, have a high safety ranking, have affordable capital cost and low maintenance costs?
* Able to deal with pressure? You’ll sometimes be expected to deliver to tight timescales.
* Adaptable? Project priorities can change and you’ll need to be flexible enough to adapt to new priorities.
* Customer-focused? You’ll need to fully understand our customers’ needs and make sure they are met through our design solutions.
* A clear communicator, who’s able to build successful working relationships and stand your ground when necessary?
