Department & how it relates to the role Please Enter Brief Vacancy Description (Text Only- Max. 4000 characters which includes all spaces) The Technology Team (T&RS), are a specialist engineering team focussed on the delivery of a wide variety of workstreams relating to Traction and Rolling Stock. Our key workstreams are as follows; – Innovation and New Technology investigation, exploitation and new ways of working relating to T&RS. – Vehicle Specification and Project Engineering. – ERTMS Trains Applications Engineering & Support. – Rail Vehicle Design. – Audit & Assurance. – Testing & Trialling. – Managing the content of Technical Training Courses relating to Network Rail’s T&RS assets. We apply our skills and expertise to both Network Rail owned Rail Vehicle Assets and also those belonging to 3rd parties where it is in support of Network Rail’s corporate objectives. As an Assistant designer you will be contributing to our various workstreams associated with the design and modification of rail vehicles. About the role (External) Please Enter Detailed External Job Description (Text Only- Max. 4000 characters which includes all spaces) The Technology Team (T&RS) has a vacancy within its rail vehicle engineering design team. Based in Derby but moving to Milton Keynes in 2012 you will provide a ‘World Class’ CAD design and modelling capability using our in-house design suite - Solid Edge, Orcad and Ansys software. Through your work you will support the procurement of new and the enhancement of existing rail vehicles by providing feasibility and detailed modelling and designs to a wide variety of our business stakeholders. As part of our Design Team your duties will be varied – but the following are important to this role. Firstly you will act as a CAD designer carrying out the formulation and delivery of engineering requirements in compliance with Legislation, Industry and Company Standards. This will involve all aspects of design works, undertaking calculations, modelling, supporting builds/installation, resolution of emerging technical issues, etc, etc not just drawing work. You will be key in making sure that intended designs are affordable, practical and present the lowest whole life risk/cost whilst meeting stakeholder/business requirements. It is expected that you will be highly accurate and methodical in your work. Candidates should also have a good understanding of Rail Vehicle Design Principles and Industry Standards and be able to work up designs from client specifications through to validation and verification. The variety of work available means you will work on many different projects and must be capable of working in both design teams for major projects and on your own initiative for minor works. Reporting to the Senior Design Engineer, you will be working very closely with other Rail Vehicle stakeholders and Design Engineers. This is a challenging post with an extremely broad remit and a wide cross section of projects and programmes. You should be capable of working at a rapid pace within a highly technical safety critical production environment. Accuracy and an outgoing personality to aid effective communication are advantageous. The home base for this post will be Derby but moving to Milton Keynes in 2012. In all cases you should be prepared to travel in connection with your allocated portfolio of design work. Electrical, mechanical and industrial design engineers are welcome to apply for this post.
