Snow Delays Harrogate Rail Station Opening - 24/12/2009

The railway station in Harrogate was unable to open on time on Christmas Eve as the person with the building's keys was snowed in, Northern Rail said.

The chargeman, who is responsible for opening the station, lives in a rural area and was delayed by the weather.

A spare set of keys were sent from Leeds station, 15 miles away, to allow Harrogate to open its doors to Christmas travellers.

The station eventually opened its doors at 0700 GMT.

Two services were cancelled and several delayed as a result of the error.
